Product Design for Manufacturing Services

3DDFM helps companies develop physical products that are ready for tooling, fabrication, assembly and production.

Our work focuses on the engineering decisions that determine whether a product can move successfully from concept or prototype into manufacturing. This includes product geometry, material and process selection, assembly, tolerances, tooling constraints and production-ready CAD.

With more than 30 years of product development and Design for Manufacturing experience, we focus on four core engineering services.

Injection Molding Design

Developing plastic products for reliable, scalable production

Injection molded products must be designed around the realities of tooling and plastic manufacturing from the beginning.

We develop and refine plastic parts with attention to:

  • wall thickness

  • ribs and bosses

  • draft angles

  • undercuts

  • parting strategy

  • tooling complexity

  • material behaviour

  • fastening and assembly

  • production tolerances

The objective is not simply to create a 3D model. It is to create product geometry that can move confidently toward injection mold tooling and repeatable production.

Best suited to: new injection molded products, existing plastic designs preparing for tooling, and products moving from 3D-printed prototype to production.

Electronic Enclosure Design

Production-ready housings for PCBs and electronic hardware

Electronic enclosure design requires the mechanical product and the electronics to work together as one system.

We develop enclosures around components such as:

  • PCBs

  • connectors

  • displays

  • switches and buttons

  • LEDs

  • batteries

  • sensors

  • wiring

  • seals

  • mounting hardware

Our work considers internal component layout, assembly sequence, fastening, clearances, tolerances, appearance and the intended manufacturing process.

Enclosures can be developed for injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining or prototype manufacturing depending on the product and expected production volume.

Best suited to: PCB-based products, IoT devices, industrial electronics, control products and electronic hardware preparing for production.

Sheet Metal Design

Product engineering for fabrication, welding and assembly

Sheet metal products must be designed around real fabrication capabilities rather than simply converted from a solid 3D model.

Our sheet metal development work considers:

  • material thickness

  • bend radius

  • flange geometry

  • bend reliefs

  • flat patterns

  • manufacturing tolerances

  • welding

  • fasteners

  • assembly

  • structural requirements

  • weight

  • transport and installation

Where required, production deliverables can include manufacturing drawings, BOMs, DXF profiles and welding information.

Best suited to: industrial equipment, electronic enclosures, fabricated products, mechanical assemblies, structural products and equipment housings.

Design for Manufacturing Consulting

Independent DFM review before committing to tooling or production

A product can work perfectly as a prototype and still contain expensive manufacturing risks.

Our Design for Manufacturing consulting service reviews existing product designs from a manufacturing perspective before significant money is committed to tooling, fabrication or production.

A review may identify issues involving:

  • injection molding

  • sheet metal fabrication

  • assembly

  • tolerance stack-up

  • material selection

  • tooling complexity

  • manufacturing feasibility

  • part count

  • production cost drivers

  • first-off-tool risks

This service is particularly valuable when a product has already been designed and you want an independent engineering review before sending it to a manufacturer or approving tooling.

Best suited to: companies preparing for tooling, reviewing a manufacturer’s DFM feedback, moving from prototype into production, or trying to identify manufacturing risks before they become expensive changes.

Which Service Does Your Product Need?

Is your plastic product ready for injection molding?

If you are developing plastic parts and need production-ready geometry for injection mold tooling, start with our Injection Molding Design Service.

Do you need a housing designed around a PCB or electronic components?

If the mechanical enclosure, internal electronics and production process need to be developed together, start with our Electronic Enclosure Design Service.

Does your product rely mainly on fabricated sheet metal parts?

If bending, welding, flat patterns, structural design and fabrication are central to the product, start with our Sheet Metal Design Service.

Do you already have CAD and want it reviewed before tooling or production?

If the design already exists and you primarily need manufacturing risks identified before committing money to tooling or fabrication, start with our Design for Manufacturing Consulting Service.

Production Experience Behind the Engineering

3DDFM’s experience extends beyond CAD and concept development into products that have been manufactured at commercial scale.

Our production experience includes:

  • high-volume injection molded electrical products, with selected designs manufactured in quantities exceeding 100,000 units

  • commercial electronic enclosures manufactured in quantities exceeding 5,000 units

  • complete injection mold tool design

  • fabricated sheet metal products that remain in commercial production and are supplied to international markets

  • concept-to-production development

  • first-off-tool evaluation and design changes

  • Design for Assembly

  • complex mechanical mechanisms

  • FEA of critical structures and components

  • production drawings, BOMs, DXFs and welding documentation

Supporting Engineering Capabilities

Depending on the project, our core services may also involve:

  • aesthetic and industrial design

  • mechanism development

  • Design for Assembly (DFA)

  • FEA

  • material selection

  • prototyping

  • injection mold tooling knowledge and tool design

  • manufacturing drawings

  • assembly and welding jig design

  • supplier and tooling interaction

  • first-off-tool production support

These capabilities support the four core services rather than operating as separate stand-alone service offerings.

Preparing a Product for Manufacturing?

If you are developing a physical product and need help moving it toward reliable production, send us information about the product, its current development stage and the intended manufacturing process.

We can then determine whether the project requires product development, Design for Manufacturing, or a focused pre-tooling review.
